The Leadership Skills Development Program for Nursing Leaders
The Leadership Skills Development Program for Nursing Leaders is a series of sessions designed to assist Leaders in their role as supervisiors to:
- elevate the perceptions among direct care workers that their work is meaningful, relevant to residents, and critical to the overall mission of the organization;
- enhance a perceived sense of professionalism so direct care workers will see themselves as professionals and act accordingly;
- embody a feeling of empowerment so direct care workers will feel confident in their ability to do a good job;
- and perpetuate an organizational culture that makes direct care workers feel appreciated and recognized.
Participants taking this course will learn 1) leadership
skills in communication, motivation, and conflict
management, and 2) skills of work design, employee
involvement and organizational cultural interventions.
A number of assessment instruments and exercises will
be used to help participants understand their personal
leadership strengths and weaknesses and the attitudes of
the direct care workers with whom they work.
In addition, participants will apply lessons learned to
their daily routine in their own facilities. These goals are based upon studies showing that front line supervisors are key to the retention of nursing assistants and other direct care workers. While factors such as compensation, occupational stress and work environment need to be addressed, a supervisor can affect a direct care worker’s decision to remain in or leave a position.
