Kendal Implements Proven Best Practices for Pennsylvania Department of Health

In a statewide Best Practices project, the involvement of Kendal's nurse educators in the implementation process improved the overall success of participating long-term care facilities in improving the quality of resident care.  To read the 2001-2006 outcomes report, click here.

Under the oversight of Kendal Outreach, three nurse educators provided consultation and training to nursing facility staff on five best practices protocols:

  • Self Care for Seniors (prevention of decline in two of the activities of daily living eating and dressing)
  • Managing pain
  • Managing depression
  • Preventing pressure ulcers,
  • Managing urinary incontinence

Facility staff members were given protocols to follow, together with documentation forms to assist in determining resident appropriateness for participation in the assigned best practice, assessing resident involvement in the protocol over time, and tracking staff progress with the implementation.

The three phase, 5-year project concluded in June of 2006. To read the 2001-2006 outcomes report, click here. Kendal nurse educators are now available for training and consultation to any facilities around the country that are interested in improving quality of care.
