Helping the Caregiver Untie the Elderly

Designed for the nursing assistant, this workshop focuses on how to care for residents with difficult behaviors, how to individualize care through creativity, and how to communicate with the cognitively impaired resident. Special attention will be given to individualized and environmental alternatives.

Learner Objectives:
At the end of the program, the participants will be able to:
1. Describe physical and emotional problems associated with the use of physical restraints.
2. Identify the advantages of providing restraint-free care.
3. Understand the importance of the certified nursing assistant’s role in creating and maintaining a safe environment.
4. Explain alternatives to physical restraints that could be implemented in a long term care facility.
5. Communicate more effectively with residents with dementia.
