Depression is frequently unrecognized in nursing home residents, especially if their symptoms are masked by dementia. Even when recognized, it is often untreated or inadequately treated. Myths and misperceptions about depression in the elderly abound among staff, families, and residents themselves. Depression is highly treatable with a multifaceted interdisciplinary approach along with traditional medications, even in the frail elderly. This session will take a holistic view of the resident and how depression affects every aspect of life, leading the learner through a comprehensive assessment process into the development of a creative, individualized care plan.
Learning objectives:
- Examine the myths and misperceptions that may prevent depression from being recognized.
- Identify residents at risk for depression.
- Recognize the role of the interdisciplinary team plays in the comprehensive assessment.
- Explore steps to create system-wide treatment interventions using alternative approaches in addition to medication.
